WhatsApp and MoMo for your business in Rwanda
7 min read
Most customers in Rwanda message WhatsApp and pay with MoMo. Set those two up well first. Add a website or app when the inbox gets too busy.
Who this is for: Anyone who sells on the phone in Rwanda
This is how people buy
In Rwanda, the first message is often WhatsApp, not email. Payment is often MoMo, not a card. If those two are messy — slow replies, wrong number, no confirmation — you lose the sale.
A website or app helps later. First, make WhatsApp and MoMo easy and trustworthy.
Set up WhatsApp Business
Use WhatsApp Business, not only your personal chat, if you can.
- check_circlePut your business name, hours, and location on the profile
- check_circleSave Quick Replies for price, location, and “we are open”
- check_circleAsk one question at a time: what they want, when, and how they will pay
- check_circleKeep one phone that staff share, or one inbox, so messages are not lost
- check_circleDownload our free WhatsApp reply templates if you want ready-made text
MoMo that customers trust
Write the merchant name and number the same way every time. Send it in WhatsApp after they agree on the price. Ask them to send the MoMo confirmation message. A person — not a tool — should say “paid” before you deliver.
- check_circleUse a business / merchant line if you qualify
- check_circleNever share your PIN, and never let a tool send money for you
- check_circleWatch for fake payment screenshots
- check_circleGive a simple receipt (even a WhatsApp message with the amount and date)
When a website or app helps
If you answer the same questions all day, put the answers on a website: prices, photos, hours, map, WhatsApp button. If you take many repeat orders, we can add a small order page or an app for staff.
We can connect the pieces
Message us if you want a website that opens WhatsApp, a clearer MoMo checkout, or help when the inbox is too full. You can also grab the free MoMo tracker and WhatsApp templates on our Resources page.
Common questions
Should I put my MoMo number on a public website?
You can show the merchant name and how to pay, but confirm the amount in WhatsApp before they send money. Always check the real MoMo message before you mark an order as paid.
Can AI reply to my WhatsApp customers?
It can draft replies for common questions. A person should still send anything about money, refunds, or complaints. Trust matters more than speed.
Do I still need a website if WhatsApp works?
Not on day one. Add a website when new people cannot find you on Google, or when staff are tired of typing the menu and the location again and again.
